Catholic Movie Reviews offers brief thoughtful movie reviews for Christians who want to understand both the artistic merit and moral implications of a film before watching.
Why we exist
Catholic Movie Reviews was created to serve Christians who love movies but want to approach them with wisdom, discernment, and a well-formed conscience.
For years, Christian moviegoers benefited from clear moral guidance when choosing what to watch. Today, that guidance is harder to find—especially for modern films that blend artistic excellence with complex or troubling themes.
This project exists to help fill that gap.
About the reviewer
The reviews and podcast are produced by a Catholic layman writing under the name Catholic Cinephile.
Remaining anonymous is intentional. The goal of this project is not personal recognition, but faithful analysis, rooted in Catholic moral teaching and a sincere love for cinema.
These reviews are not official Church statements, but informed Catholic perspectives offered to assist viewers in making prudent, conscience-led choices.
“ Human and religious values that deserve attention and praise are often present, not only in films that make direct reference to the tradition of Christianity but also in films of different cultures and religions. This confirms the importance of the cinema as a vehicle for cultural exchange and as an invitation to openness and reflection in dealing with realities foreign to our upbringing and mentality. In this sense, the cinema serves to overcome distance and acquires that dignity particular to culture which is a specific dimension of the existence and being of man. It creates among the persons within each community a complex of bonds, determining the interpersonal and social character of human existence ”
